KTM 200 Street Motorcycle

Up until about 5 years ago, the PowerSports industry had done a great job of ignoring entry level riders, offering very few models for new riders to get started. Instead, we often had to put them on overpowered machines, on which they’d soon have an expensive accident and thus would exit from the industry.

Today I saw in my newsfeed a quick blip about this new KTM 200 with an MSRP of $3999 and I thought it’s a pretty cool little bike with some great features (upside down forks, wow!) If it turns out to be a well made machine, I expect dealers will sell all that KTM can produce.

Hopefully there is also a decent margin for dealers. I do know that there are some metric dealers who have loudly complained about the margins on other smaller Japanese bikes (often charging unwitting consumers exorbitant freight and setup fees, and thus taking those customers out of the market forever) and giving the rest of us a bad name.

For our dealer, I’m all about these entry level bikes. Anything to get new riders in the market is a good thing. If we don’t make a strong margin on the first bike, we will on the next.

Way to go KTM!
