Lemons on a table

I’ve got to admit, my familiarity lies with the laws of the great State of Texas, but I believe most of the other areas of this country have Lemon Laws that help to protect consumers.

We dealers are often caught between the customer and the OEM. Manufacturer margins are bigger than dealer margins. OEMs hold the cards and have the deep pockets. They have a responsibility to build good and reliable products, and to support dealers on the technical side and with parts availability.

I understand that this little pandemic has created some supply chain issues, but that doesn’t exempt the OEMs from their responsibilities to support dealers and to take care of customers. With many OEMs producing poor quality vehicles (at premium prices) and cutting back on dealer support, it’s the dealer who is often left out in the cold.

In Texas, it’s $35 and a simple form to file a lemon law complaint. That process essentially forces the OEM to either work with the customer to fix the problem, or to buy the vehicle back.

I’m starting to think that dealers across the country can use the lemon laws to drive the change that we need to see in our industry?
