Person wearing a mask over their nose and mouth

I’ve spent the last week back at our dealership in TX, a great State, but one that places more belief in hopes and prayers than it does in science. Failures of government at all levels (both in messaging and preparation) has resulted in an exponential increase in the number of people infected with the virus. It’s not looking good.

On Tuesday, two of our staff tested positive for the virus, and a third is presumptive positive. While we had plans to deal with this situation, what we didn’t have plans for was how to deal with the fear that built up in the staff. Gossip and rumors only made things worse.

On Thursday we decided to have an impromptu meeting with the entire staff. It was a fact based meeting. We discussed where we were at, what we were doing, and where we saw things going. We also let our staff know that if they had any questions, they should come and ask management. Finally, we reminded them that we are already dealing with enough negative outside forces, and that we didn’t need to also tear ourselves apart from the inside.

For now, things are under control, but we know each new infection will reignite these fears.

It’s hard to prepare for the things you expect, it’s tougher to prepare for the things you never even thought about.
