Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out

When I was in 8th grade, my math teacher was also my track coach. I’m sure there are some differences between teachers and coaches.

Teaching is about the fundamentals. It’s often a repetitious transfer of knowledge, all while trying to keep the student awake. Coaching is about fine tuning the skills of a player. Analyzing what they do and how they do it, and then looking for ways to improve. Increases may be incremental, but inches matter.

For owners, GMs, and managers, it’s important that you understand the difference between the two processes. New salespeople, or a new product, often require teaching moments. Once everyone is up to speed, it’s time to transition over to the coaching mentality.

Coaches typically spend more time watching and listening than they do talking and showing. One of my Drill Instructors once told me that “it’s hard to learn when your mouth is open”. That’s a powerful statement.

As we come into the slow season and things settle down a bit, take some time to think about the things you can do to improve the skill sets of the players on your team. Instead of trying to teach new skills to your employees, get out there and coach them.
