Mug with logo "you can win if you want"

A few years back I read a thought provoking article. The author thought that business owners were making a mistake when it came to spending the majority of their training efforts on the low performers. The premise was that even the best people in any field can always get better. Top sports players have coaches. Many professions require that the experts in those fields participate in annual training and continuing education. Try to identify a field where the best aren’t trying to get better.

In our industry, we often train people for a week or two (some less than that) and then we turn them loose to practice on real customers. Past that, when someone makes a mistake they get a talking to, but we rarely take the time to help improve the skills of our top performers.

I don’t have any official data on this subject, but it would be interesting to take some of the top sales people in our industry and see could be done to take them to the next level. Instead of having rookies burn through fresh ups, what if we could add 3 more points to the closing ratio?

What are you doing to improve the skills of everyone on your team? Do you spend any time training?
