I recently listened to a podcast detailing a study that involved Microsoft. They identified a large group of people who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After obtaining permission from those individuals, they analyzed the search history of these people for a few years prior to the diagnosis. Analysis of the data was able to identify a unique pattern and order of terms that these people had used in search engines (stomach pain, headaches, acid reflux, etc.) leading up to the diagnosis. While the system isn’t perfect, it’s fascinating that at some point in the future a person may be able to receive an early diagnosis of a disease just from his or her search habits.

I’m always thinking about the future. I fully believe that in 5 years, we won’t just buy ads to target the people who are looking for specific products like motorcycles, boats or RVs, but we’ll actually be able to target ads to people who don’t even know that they are soon going to be in the market for the products we sell.

The dealers who will be successful in the future will be the early adopters, those who aren’t constrained by the box.
