Kiva Cannabis chocolate bar

This week’s topic. Weed, and how should dealers address the use of this drug by employees.

At the Federal level, it’s illegal. Certain States have approved its use at different levels. Business owners are caught in the middle.

When asked for my thoughts on this issue, I always tell dealers to get their garage liability insurance company and PEO/HR company involved (preferably in the same room). Short of bad management and fraud, one of the top items that can cause a business to close the doors is the loss of a multi-million dollar lawsuit and/or being uninsurable.

Unlike alcohol, traces of marijuana stay in the system for a while. If your driver runs the company truck into a minivan full of a young couple and their new family, that driver is going to be tested. If he comes up positive for THC, there’s no way to tell if he smoked a joint last week, or 3 hours ago. Either way, it’s not going to be good for you or your insurance company (or the people in the minivan that he killed).

Our country is bankrupt, and at some point congress will legalize weed so they can tax it. Until then, let your insurance agency help you to determine what your policy should look like.
